Wildlife Wednesdays: Chiggers

Welcome to another edition of Wildlife Wednesdays! This week, we’re exploring chiggers—tiny pests that can cause big discomfort. While they may be small, understanding how to avoid them can make a significant difference in your outdoor experiences.

What Are Chiggers?

Chiggers, also known as red bugs, are the larvae of a type of mite belonging to the Trombiculidae family. They are nearly microscopic, measuring less than 1/150th of an inch, and are usually red, orange, or yellow. Chiggers thrive in warm, humid environments and are commonly found in grassy fields, forests, and areas with thick vegetation.

How Do Chiggers Affect Humans?

Chiggers don’t bite like mosquitoes or ticks; instead, they attach to the skin and inject digestive enzymes that break down skin cells. This process creates a red, itchy welt that can cause discomfort for several days.

The itching sensation is the result of your body’s reaction to the enzymes, and it can be quite intense, leading to scratching and potential secondary infections if not treated properly.

How to Protect Yourself from Chiggers

While chigger bites can be uncomfortable, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself:

  1. Dress Appropriately: When venturing into areas where chiggers are common, wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Tucking pants into socks can also help prevent them from reaching your skin.

  2. Use Insect Repellent: Apply an insect repellent containing DEET or permethrin on exposed skin and clothing to deter chiggers.

  3. Stay on Trails: Avoid walking through tall grass or heavy vegetation. Stick to well-maintained trails where chiggers are less likely to be present.

  4. Shower After Exposure: Take a hot shower and scrub your skin with soap after spending time in areas where chiggers may be present. This can help remove any chiggers before they attach to your skin.

  5. Launder Clothing: Wash your clothing in hot water after outdoor activities to eliminate any chiggers that may have hitched a ride.

Treating Chigger Bites

If you do get bitten by chiggers, there are a few ways to alleviate the itching:

  • Apply Anti-Itch Cream: Over-the-counter creams or ointments containing hydrocortisone or calamine lotion can help reduce itching and inflammation.

  • Take Antihistamines: Oral antihistamines can help relieve itching and reduce allergic reactions.

  • Avoid Scratching: While it’s tempting to scratch, try to resist as it can lead to infection.
